Steady progress has been made on the diversion works at the washed away bridge at Kankumba Stream on the Great East Road in Sinjela area, aimed at allowing traffic to start flowing.
The Road Development Agency RDA, Zambia National Service (ZNS) and the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) are working together on the operation, with the works going overnight to ensure the diversion is created and made passable.
All critical equipment required for the diversion including an excavator, compactor and grader are on site and actively engaged in the works. Gravel is being sourced locally to expedite the process, and the diversion is expected to be completed as soon as possible after which traffic flow is anticipated to resume under managed conditions.
In parallel with the diversion works, the installation of the Acrow Bridge is progressing steadily.
Both trucks transporting the Acrow Bridge components have arrived on site and successfully offloaded the materials. Assembly and installation of the bridge are currently underway, with completion expected within three days.
The diversion and bridge works are being undertaken simultaneously to minimize disruption and restore connectivity as quickly as possible.
Meanwhile, DMMU Lusaka Province Coordinator Dr. Kangacepe Zulu has confirmed that DMMU has continued to coordinate and support the ongoing works on site.
Dr. Zulu said DMMU has delivered essential logistical and welfare supplies to support personnel and enhance operational efficiency. Among the things delivered by DMMU include cases of drinking water, mobile toilet units, granular chlorine and hand sanitizer for disinfection, as well as hand washing buckets.
Additionally, a tent has been erected to serve as a command and emergency operations center to strengthen coordination and response efforts.
Dr. Zulu emphasized that DMMU will remain on site throughout the operation to ensure continued coordination, support, and monitoring of works until full access and normal traffic movement are restored.
