ZAMBIA COMMEMORATES THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR DISASTER RISK REDUCTION
The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) has been celebrated in Zambia with a call on the education sector to strengthen disaster risk reduction education in schools.
Vice President Mrs. W.K. Mutale Nalumango, who graced the event, emphasized the need for the country to include youths in disaster risk management by teaching learners to understand issues surrounding disaster risk reduction.
Mrs. Nalumango observed that empowering the next generation for a resilient future requires the full inclusion of young people in national disaster prevention policies.
Speaking at the same event, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative reaffirmed the UN’s support for Zambia, emphasizing collaboration to create a safer and more resilient future.
The national commemoration of the day was held at Lusaka’s showgrounds under the theme, “Empowering the Next Generation for a Resilient Future.”
The event was preceded by a march-past, which was flagged off by DMMU National Coordinator Dr. Gabriel Pollen at the DMMU offices and an exhibition at the venue.
Commemoration of the day was also observed in provincial headquarters across the country, with government officials and partners, led by the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) staff, marching and gathering to reflect on what remains to be done to substantially reduce the disaster and climatic shocks people face.
The event, flagged off by DMMU National Coordinator Dr. Gabriel Pollen, focused on building community resilience through youth empowerment.
The celebration of the IDDRR underscored the shared responsibility in reducing disaster risks and protecting future generations.
